Does PIP cover motorcycle accidents in Florida?

Short Answer
No. Motorcycles aren't covered by Florida's PIP system, which is a significant and widely misunderstood gap.

This is one of the most consequential gaps in Florida insurance law.

Florida's no-fault system does not extend PIP to motorcycles. A motorcyclist injured in a crash generally has no PIP benefits from the motorcycle policy, regardless of fault.

What that means practically. There's no automatic medical coverage. Bills fall to health insurance, to the rider personally, or wait for a liability claim to resolve. A rider without health insurance can face substantial bills immediately.

One consequence riders don't expect: because there's no PIP, the injury threshold that limits when you can sue in an ordinary car case generally doesn't apply the same way to a motorcyclist. That's a meaningful difference in how the claim proceeds.

What riders should carry. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage matters more here than almost anywhere else, along with medical payments coverage where available and adequate health insurance.

Note that a motorcyclist injured while occupying a car — a different vehicle — falls under the ordinary analysis.

If you ride, check your UM and medical payments coverage now. PIP won't be there. ---
