Will a DUI make me lose my job?
Possibly, and the reasons vary more than people expect.
Where a DUI directly threatens employment: any job requiring driving, any position requiring a commercial license, jobs with fleet insurance requirements, positions requiring a security clearance, and roles where a licensing body or contract imposes reporting obligations.
Where it may not: many private employers have no policy triggered by a misdemeanor conviction, and many never learn of it unless a background check is run or the person reports it.
The practical problem is frequently the license rather than the record. Someone who can't drive to work for six months faces an employment consequence before any conviction is entered — which is one reason the ten-day administrative deadline deserves more attention than it usually gets.
Whether to tell an employer is a separate question with real consequences either way, and one worth thinking through before the decision gets made for you.
